Three reasons to explore a career in B2B tech PR

Like many graduates, when I left university, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career. And understandably so, it’s a tough decision to make. After studying English, I was certain that I wanted to have a job that involved writing – but was not sure what form it would take. After months of CV editing, cover letters and online applications, I found myself entering the world of B2B tech PR.
Fast forward a few years and I’m still here – and loving every minute of it. Each day brings something new and you can’t predict what’s next. Here are three reasons I’d recommend exploring a career in B2B tech PR:
You’ll learn to tell a good story
As an agency, Spark puts aside the time to really understand a client and the industry they are working in. The end result? Creative storytelling that encapsulates the client's messaging and captures the attention of journalists. There’s nothing more satisfying than putting in the time and effort brainstorming creative angles for a media pitch and securing a great piece of coverage off the back of it.
I recently pitched a story warning ‘Grinch bots’ were snapping up the most wanted presents in the run-up to Christmas. We built the pitch using research from Imperva that showed bots were sending prices skyrocketing on secondary markets, leaving consumers empty-handed – and added a creative spin by drawing comparisons with the green monster that steals Christmas presents. After pitching, we secured The Independent among other hits. It makes the job so rewarding when you see the results our creative storytelling brings.
Every day is different
The technology sector is constantly evolving and working in B2B tech PR means you’re right at the heart of the action. Whether it’s a major event such as a global IT outage or the explosion of interest in Generative AI, no two days are the same. This means you’re always working on fresh and engaging stories, which can shape business decisions and industry conversations.
One day you might be on a news hijack, pitching comments to journalists on the lack of readiness around post-quantum encryption. The next you might be drafting a letter to the editor, on the need to adopt a digital approach to infrastructure projects to secure private sector investment. This variety means you stay engaged with work and the days never get boring.
It’s fun along the way
As an agency, it’s not ‘all work and no play’. The next social event with journalists or other PR professionals is always just around the corner – along with team lunches, after-work drinks and our famous summer team building days.
We have regular socials in the office, where we unwind and make our own cocktails, which admittedly have had varying levels of success. This mix of agency and wider industry social activities makes it easy to form a bond with colleagues and forms a key part of agency life.
A next career move?
As a graduate, I didn’t think I’d end up in B2B tech PR but I’m glad it happened. I’ve learned a lot during my career so far, including new technologies set to shape the future, while honing my media relations and writing skills. Most importantly, I’ve enjoyed it and met a lot of great people. But there’s no need to fall into B2B tech PR like I did. If you’re unsure what to do, enjoy a varied work life and want to work in an industry packed with innovation, B2B tech PR is well worth exploring.
